Yes, your first instinct is to place right next to so you make highest amount of food but, you can move the granary and stockpile to keep your village less cluttered. Means that if you have one building that does not produce the 2000 you will not take in any of the food from that building. Z = Amount of food that should be being produced for each villager (If it is below the number of food you will not take in any of that kind) Ex. Y = differnt kinds of food you currently have being made * Peasents and food: Peasents require food to eat and there is an equation that you should note.
